Search Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons system after an Ontonagon County connection, use the federal locator only when the case or sentence is federal. No BOP institution has been identified in Ontonagon County. The federal system is therefore a conditional fallback, not the county’s ordinary release channel. A locator result can show a current institution or a completed BOP event. It cannot explain a local jail release, an ICE transfer, or every form of federal detention. Exact status wording and the responsible authority matter.

Federal Ontonagon Release Paths

The BOP manages sentenced federal prisoners. A person can be released after completing the custodial term, but a federal court may impose supervised release afterward. That supervision belongs to the federal courts and U.S. Probation, not the Michigan Parole Board or Ontonagon’s MDOC field office.

Federal pretrial detention is different. The U.S. Marshals Service may place detainees in contracted facilities, yet it does not offer a public locator like BOP. A transfer from Ontonagon County Jail to USMS custody ends local custody without proving community release.

Confirm Federal Release Records

The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. A register number gives the strongest match. A name search can be narrowed with age, race, and sex, but those fields still require careful identity comparison.

  1. Search the BOP register number when available.
  2. Otherwise enter the full legal name and compare all identifiers.
  3. Open the matching result and copy the exact status.
  4. If it says Released, record the displayed release date.
  5. If it says Not in BOP custody, read the locator explanation before drawing a conclusion.
Important: “Not in BOP custody” does not by itself identify the person’s current location or prove release to the community.

For a local event before the federal case, use the Ontonagon County release search and obtain the sheriff’s receiving-agency field.

View the Federal Release Locator

The official BOP locator is the federal search entry used for sentenced-prison custody and release records:

The locator screen is the correct federal starting point. It does not create a local BOP institution in Ontonagon County or cover every USMS pretrial detainee.

BOP Release Record Meaning

A BOP result marked Released with a date is evidence of the federal prison system’s event. It is not an Ontonagon County jail date. It also does not show whether federal supervised release followed, whether a different sovereign took custody, or whether another case remained active.

Use the federal court docket and judgment for the sentence. Supervised release is a court-imposed term managed through federal probation. It is not Michigan parole. When the question concerns federal pretrial detention, the relevant court and USMS district are more useful than BOP because a pretrial detainee may never enter sentenced BOP custody.

The preferred BOP identifier.
Released
A completed BOP custody event with a displayed date.
Not in BOP custody
A status requiring the BOP explanation and other records.
Supervised release
Federal court supervision after custody.

Federal System Contact Route

No BOP facility or county BOP records counter exists in Ontonagon County. Use the locator first, then the current facility shown there or the responsible federal court. The USMS public prisoner-information page explains that it does not provide a public detainee locator and directs sentenced-prisoner searches to BOP.

Do not send a federal records request to the Ontonagon County Sheriff unless the requested item is the county’s own booking or transfer record. The sheriff can document a local handoff. It cannot certify what occurred later in federal custody.

Federal Court Release Context

A federal judgment supplies the prison term and any supervised-release term. A docket may also show detention, bond, sentencing, revocation, or later orders. Those documents explain legal authority. The BOP locator shows the prison-system status. Neither replaces the other.

MiCOURT is not the federal docket. OTIS is not the federal prison locator. Michigan VINE is not the authoritative BOP release record. Use each system only for the custody layer it maintains.

Note: A federal release date and a county transfer date may describe two separate events months or years apart.

Federal Locator Coverage Limits

BOP’s published range begins in 1982. A no-result may involve an earlier event, a spelling or identifier problem, federal pretrial custody, immigration detention, or another system. It is not proof that the person was released. Check the case type and responsible agency before broadening the search.

No official source identifies a BOP prison in Ontonagon County. A county connection can come from residence, arrest, court history, or transfer without creating a local federal institution.

Federal Transfer Versus Release

A county record may say USMS pickup, federal hold, or transfer. That ends the Ontonagon jail episode but continues custody. Ask for the receiving authority. Then use the federal court and, after sentencing into BOP, the locator. Do not report a community release merely because the person disappeared from the county channel.

The same care applies after BOP custody. A Released label may lead to federal supervised release or another lawful authority. Confirm the exact question with the system that owns it.

Verify Federal Ontonagon Records

Confirm identity with the register number when possible. Preserve the BOP status and date. Compare the federal judgment and docket. If Ontonagon County held the person first, obtain the local disposition and receiving agency as a separate event.

This chain distinguishes local release, federal transfer, federal prison release, and later federal supervision without blending them into one record.

Preserve Federal Release Proof

A locator screen is a starting record. Save the register number, full displayed name, exact status, release date, and date checked. Then compare the federal judgment. The judgment states the custodial term and any supervised-release term, while the locator reports the BOP event. If a court later revokes supervision or enters another order, the docket supplies context that a single locator line cannot.

When a person was first booked in Ontonagon County, request the county release timestamp, disposition, and receiving agency. That local record may show a federal handoff. It cannot establish the end of BOP custody years later. Likewise, a later BOP release date does not explain the earlier county case. Treat them as linked but independent entries.

The U.S. Marshals Service gap is important. USMS can hold federal pretrial detainees through contracted facilities but offers no public detainee locator comparable to BOP. A person may therefore be in federal pretrial custody and absent from the sentenced-prison search. Use the relevant federal district and case record rather than calling the absence a release.

A federal name search must be checked carefully. Similar names, age fields, race, and sex can narrow results, but the register number remains the safer identifier. Do not merge two people because a county connection seems plausible. Exact identifiers and the originating federal record control.

Read Federal Status Carefully

BOP’s locator covers a specific population and period. It is not an all-federal-custody search. A sentenced prisoner may appear with an institution. A completed event may appear as Released with a date. A person in USMS pretrial detention can be outside the locator’s sentenced-prison role. Immigration detention belongs to ICE. Each gap points to a different official channel.

“Not in BOP custody” needs the locator legend and the case record. It may describe a status other than physical confinement in a BOP institution, but it does not state where the person is now. Do not translate it automatically to “free,” “home,” or “released to Ontonagon County.”

Federal supervised release also survives the custodial event when imposed by the court. It is distinct from Michigan parole and from MDOC felony probation. The federal judgment gives the term, while the federal probation system administers it. The BOP release date alone cannot establish when that later supervision ends.

If another sovereign takes custody at the end of a federal term, the BOP event and the receiving custody are separate. Preserve both. Accurate wording should say the person left BOP custody on the displayed date, then identify any confirmed next authority without collapsing the handoff into community release.

When no register number is available, the federal case number can help confirm identity behind a name result. Do not use an Ontonagon case number as though it were a BOP identifier. County, federal court, USMS, and BOP systems assign numbers for different records, so label each one.
